Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) — A new phone scam is being reported in Williamson County.

According to Sheriff Bennie Vick, his office received two reports Monday of a scammer identifying himself over the phone as “Deputy Delaney.”

Vick says the scammer told the victim they had missed a court date and then attempted to force the victim into paying a fine over the phone.

A fairly common scam, this one has a new twist to appear more legitimate. The scammer leaves a call back number of (618) 319-7911. If you were you to call that number you would get an automated message claiming you had reached the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Vick reminds the public that any legitimate law enforcement agency will never demand immediate payment over the phone.
