CHICAGO (AP) — Democrats have expressed confidence that they’ve maintained their veto-proof majority in the Illinois House.

The Democrats won a vast majority of races in Tuesday’s election viewed as crucial to House Speaker Michael Madigan retaining his current level of control. Republican challenger Jim Wozniak  conceded he lost Wednesday in a race against Democratic state Rep. Mike Smiddy that had been too close to call.

House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie says the caucus was “pretty confident” Democrats had kept their supermajority.
Madigan spent liberally from his campaign coffers to protect vulnerable members. Republican governor-elect Bruce Rauner donated millions of dollars in an effort to weaken Democrats’ hold on the Legislature.

Senate Democrats maintained their veto proof majority after losing only one seat.
