Former Williamson County State’s Attorney Charles Garnati has been censured by the Illinois Supreme Court just a week after resigning from office.
He was censured in a decision released yesterday for making improper and racially based opening and closing arguments during the prosecution of Marcus Marshall, who was on trial and eventually convicted in a 2010 murder case.
Marshall’s conviction was later overturned by an appellate court that found that race played a major role in the trial, thus denying Marshall’s right to a fair trial.
Garnati has disagreed with the allegations, saying that the censure had nothing to do with his resignation.
