NASHVILLE, Ill. (WJPF) – A police officer is recovering after being stabbed in the neck in Washington County.

The incident happened around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday in Nashville.

Police say they were initially called to perform a wellness check. They took a man into protective custody and then  to his apartment to gather personal items.  While inside the apartment, police say the man grabbed a sharp object and stabbed an officer in the neck and later barricaded himself inside of the apartment.

A SWAT team and negotiators were called in.  After a few hours the man surrendered to authorities around 4:00 a.m. Wednesday.

The man was taken to jail.  His name has not been released.  The police officer was treated and later released from a St. Louis hospital.
