St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told FOX-2 in St. Louis on Wednesday that the team is planning on participating in this year’s Major League Baseball trade deadline, stating “We are going to trade people.”

The Cardinals are at the bottom of the National League Central division with a 38-52 record coming out of the All-Star break.  They are 11.5 games behind the NL Central leading Cincinnati Reds and 11 games back of the last Wild Card spot.

Mozeliak is going in to the trade deadline with a focus on the 2024 season, which leads some fans to believe the franchise will be sellers – rather than attempt to salvage the season with some splashy trades.

“We’re not necessarily waving the white flag,” Mozeliak said.  “But all decisions or all moves we do are really going to try to set us up for next year.”
