SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WJPF) — Former inmates in southern Illinois may have had their voter registrations wrongly cancelled.

The Illinois State Board of Elections says that less than 25 individuals were wrongly categorized as currently incarcerated.

These people had completed their sentences and had been released.

In Illinois, voting rights are suspended during an inmate’s period of incarceration but are restored upon release. The individual must re-register to vote.
