Two area school districts have received grants under the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program.

Herrin received a little over $89,000 and Murphysboro got $76,000, according to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s office. The funds allocated will be used for sidewalk and crossing improvements and signage, according to the governor’s office.

In all, $5.5 million was awarded to local communities for projects that encourage students to walk or bike to school.
