As the summer vacation season heats up, Sunday was a deadly day for travelers on Southern Illinois interstates.

One woman was killed and another injured when a Gulfstream Motor Home crashed into the median on I-24 near milepost 18 yesterday afternoon.

State troopers say a tire on the vehicle blew out, causing the crash. 60 year old Karen Braswell was ejected from the motor home and pronounced dead at the scene. 68 year old Mary Allen was air lifted to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On I-57 at mile marker 24, state police say two people were killed with their southbound vehicle crossed the median and hit a northbound semi, head on. The driver of the semi was not hurt in the crash, which closed the northbound lanes of the interstate near Vienna for several hours.

And a third fatal crash in Jefferson County near Ina closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 57 for more than four hours.

State Police say a vehicle traveling north on the interstate crossed the median near mile marker 81 and hit a southbound vehicle head on. That crash killed an 18 year old woman and injured three others.

State troopers say all three crashes remain under investigation.
