Proposed legislation, supported by the Illinois State Treasurer, could help ensure that insurance companies paid out all the money owed to the beneficiaries of life insurance policies.

If passed, insurance companies would be required to examine the last 20 years of their records to verify that money was distributed properly.

So far, about $500 million has been found in unpaid life insurance benefits.
