A Golconda fugitive was arrested yesterday afternoon after a dramatic chase that started at Paducah’s airport.

27 year old Matthew C. Werner was sentenced to eight years in prison this summer and received a short furlough, but did not return in early August when he was supposed to.

The Pope County Sheriff’s Office got information that he was trying to return a rental car at the Paducah airport, and an airport security officer tried to detain him. Authorities say Werner assaulted the officer and fled in a car with his three year old child inside.

A chase ensued, and authorities say Werner rammed a police cruiser and came out of the car swinging before he was taken into custody.

In addition to the escape charges already pending, Werner is facing a slew of new ones this morning.
