Carbondale, Ill. – The interim chancellor at SIU says he has a treatable form of cancer.

Dr. Paul Sarvela told SIU faculty, staff and students in an email that he has undergone tests over the past few weeks, and doctors say he has a treatable tumor that’s a type of carcinoma.

Sarvela says he will remain the interim chancellor, even if that means he has to modify his schedule somewhat. He emphasized the need for routine physicals in his email to SIU campus, saying he wouldn’t have known about the tumor if he didn’t visit his family physician.
