HILLSBORO, Ill. (AP) — A judge has handed a probation sentence to a Georgia truck driver whose vehicle struck and killed an Illinois State Police trooper in November 2012.

Kyle Deatherage was killed during a traffic stop along Interstate 55 near Litchfield. Reckless homicide and operating a commercial vehicle without proper licensing charges were filed against 54-year-old Johnny B. Felton Jr. of Hinesville, Georgia.

After pleading guilty to the charges, a Montgomery County Circuit Court judge on Thursday sentenced Felton to 28 months of probation, a $2,500 fine and loss of his commercial driver’s license.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports State’s Attorney Chris Matoush agreed to the plea after consulting with Deatherage’s family and state police.

Deatherage’s widow and their two children have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Felton and his employer DTI.
