BENTON, Ill. (AP) — A federal judge has ruled a Chicago man accused of mailing threats of beheadings, bombings and other violence to Southern Illinois University’s Carbondale campus must remain in custody.

A federal judge in Chicago ruled last week that 21-year-old Derrick Dawan Burns qualifies for bond, but she stayed her decision while prosecutors appealed.

Judge Phil Gilbert reversed that ruling on Tuesday in Benton. Gilbert says Burns is a potential risk to others and to himself, noting a suicide attempt in 2012.

Burns is charged with eight felonies linked to what investigators say were threatening mailings sent over a yearlong span in 2012 and 2013. Prosecutors have said Burns threatened rapes, bombings and beheadings.
