Herrin, Ill. – A woman accused of suffocating her child in 2008 is being retried in Williamson County.

Jury selection began yesterday for 24-year-old Karrae Starr. She was originally convicted in 2010 of first degree murder in the death of three-year-old Bianca Starr, but the jury also found she was mentally ill.

An appellate court threw out the guilty verdict because the jury wasn’t told that Starr could not be found guilty of first degree murder unless she was “practically certain” that she was going to kill Bianca. They also questioned the instructions jurors were given regarding Starr’s mental state.
