CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn is highlighting what he calls a successful first year of the Affordable Care Act in Illinois.

The Democratic governor who is up for re-election appeared at a medical facility Tuesday in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. He announced that more than 685,000 residents signed up for health care since open enrollment began about a year ago.

That includes 468,000 residents who enrolled in the expanded Medicaid program under the federal legislation, and another 217,000 who enrolled in private health plans.

Quinn says that’s a result of the state’s “aggressive enrollment efforts.”

The second year of open enrollment is scheduled to begin Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15. Quinn says the next goal is to have at least a million of the state’s residents enroll in the program.
