The Illinois School Management Alliance is asking Gov. Bruce Rauner to veto a bill that would mandate a $40,000 starting salary for teachers by 2022.

Senate Bill 2892 passed both chambers last month. State Sen. Andy Manar sponsored the bill.

A letter the Illinois School Management Alliance sent Rauner Friday said the bill would be a substantial unfunded mandate and consume much or all of any new moneys from recently reformed school funding formula.

Before voting “no” last month on a measure to pay teachers at least $40,000 starting salary by 2022, state Sen. Dale Righter said the mandate will mean cuts to other school offerings, like sports.
