Additional details about a car driving over headstones at the Herrin Cemetery have been released.

According to a press release from the Herrin Police Department, an officer in a marked car had just finished escorting a funeral procession to the cemetery and was exiting the property when he noticed a car doing an estimated 20 miles per hour over the speed limit.

The officer attempted to pull the driver over, but they fled into the cemetery.

When the driver’s path became blocked by cars from the funeral, he drove off the road, through the cemetery, knocking over headstones, eventually getting stuck on one.

The driver, 37-year-old Darian Richardson, was arrested on a number of charges including aggravated fleeing and alluding a peace officer, resisting and obstructing a peace officer, criminal damage to property, and illegal transportation of alcohol.
