A new vaccination rule went into effect this month and could affect the more than 185,000 children in the state covered by the Children’s Health Insurance Plan.

In late August, the Illinois Department of Public Health told doctors that patients covered by CHIP would no longer get their vaccines for free. Doctors now have to privately order vaccines from suppliers and wait to be reimbursed by the state.

IDPH officials say the change was prompted by the Centers for Disease Control.
