Dr. Brian Burns, a Harrisburg physician, will be tried March 22, 2017, in the slaying of his estranged wife, Carla Burns.

Burns appeared in a Saline County court room this afternoon for a status hearing, where the trial date was set.

Burns’ attorney Nick Brown told Judge Walden Morris that he was working through the discovery in the case and had engaged expert witnesses. He said his client would like a trial date in late January or February if the state agreed.

But Saline County State’s Attorney Mike Henshaw said the March trial date would work best. A final pretrial hearing has been set for March 2, 2017.

Prosecutors say Burns killed his estranged wife and burned her body in March. She was last seen on March 8, and the doctor was arrested on March 16.

Carla Burns had filed for divorce in December 2014, and the two had been dealing with the legal details since then.

Burns is charged with two counts of first degree murder and concealment of a homicidal death. He remains in the Saline County Jail with bond set at $10 million.
