More than a million dollars in state grant money will turn a former National Guard Armory in Mount Vernon into a rec center for the community.

Mount Vernon Mayor Mary Jane Chesley announced the grants yesterday – she said they were actually awarded in 2014, but the city never got the money because of state budget issues.

Now the money from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is on the way.

Chesley said the center will include sports facilities as well as space for classes and other community activities. It is set to open late next year.

A second $400,000 grant will add tennis courts, restrooms and other improvements to Mount Vernon’s Lincoln Park.
