Heroin

House Lawmakers are voting to require Medicaid coverage of heroin treatment.

The provision was vetoed by the Governor, and is a part of a comprehensive bill aimed a combatting the growing heroin problem in Illinois.

“The heroin epidemic isn’t constrained by a zip code, and watching another kid, left and right, dying, overdosing on heroin sickens me. It brings tears to many of our eyes, and we have to do everything within our power to stop this and reverse this, before it gets even more pervasive” says House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Burr Ridge).

The House easily overrode the Governor’s veto, giving Medicaid recipients access to heroin treatment and addiction recovery services. The Senate must do the same in order for the bill to become law.
