SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — New campaign finance reports are giving a snapshot of fundraising and spending by the candidates for statewide office.

Third-quarter fundraising reports due to the State Board of Elections show GOP treasurer candidate Tom Cross had $614,981 in cash on hand as of Sept. 30. Democratic contender Michael Frerichs had $413,563. Both bidders for the open seat have spent heavily on television ads in recent months.

Incumbent Republican Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka had $1.44 million in cash on hand. Democratic challenger Sheila Simon had just $105,997. Simon is currently the lieutenant governor.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Secretary of State Jesse White each reported large campaign funds while their lesser-known opponents had little cash left on hand. Madigan faces Republican Paul Schimpf and White faces Republican Mike Webster.
