Marion, Ill. – The Marion City Council has voted to let a hotel tax increase sunset in two years.

The motion passed by a 3-2 vote yesterday. The council voted in April to raise taxes on motels from five-percent to six-percent in order to generate roughly $100,000 for the Hub Recreational Center.

Mayor Bob Butler and Commissioner John Goss voted against the proposal, saying the tax should remain at five percent instead of rising in July.
