NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Illinois State University has its largest freshman class since 1989.

Officials say this fall’s first-year class has slightly fewer than 3,600 students.

That’s a 20 percent increase from 2013.

On-campus enrollment is 20,270 — a 1.7 percent increase over a year ago.

SIU enrollment increased by 25 students to 17,989 this fall, breaking a ten-year decline in enrollment.

Another 344 students are enrolled in off-campus programs, bringing the total student population to just over 20,615. That’s also an increase of 1.7 percent from last fall.
