Massac County officials are watching the mailbox today to see if they receive any absentee ballots. Officials say 17 ballots were still outstanding as of yesterday. They must be postmarked by Election Day, so that means there’s a possibility of receiving one or more today.

They matter in one race—the question of whether or not the county will be authorized to charge a sales tax for its facilities. Right now, there are 3,318 votes FOR the tax, and 3,319 AGAINST.

If it passes, the sales tax funds would be used to repair and renovate the Massac County Courthouse – which is in such bad shape that employees and court business have been moved to another building.

If no more ballots are received, it’s likely there will be a recount in the race.

County officials say if the measure fails, the county will have to make deep cuts in departments such as the sheriff’s office and the highway department.
