The Trump administration says Illinois is issuing CDL’s illegally.
The U.S. Department of Transportation claims a review of the state’s CDL program found about 20 percent of licenses were issued to undocumented immigrants.
Federal officials have given Illinois 30 days to revoke those licenses or risk losing 128 million dollars in federal highway funding.
The Transportation Department also says more than 550 driving schools could be forced to close over safety concerns.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias pushed back against the claims, condemning the threat to withhold funding and saying the state followed federal requirements when determining the legal status of CDL holders.
