The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says the chase began after a traffic violation in Pulaski County and continued into Johnson County. Deputies say the suspect crashed his vehicle in the Gore Canyon area and then ran from the scene on foot.

Around 2:20 p.m., the suspect was spotted heading into the woods north of Tunnel Hill Road, about a quarter mile east of Illinois Route 37.

During the search, authorities say the suspect attempted to get into Sheriff Sopczak’s personal vehicle on East Side Street in Goreville. The sheriff was inside and armed, catching the suspect by surprise. The suspect then surrendered without further incident.
