CARONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – A homeless person was assaulted Monday in Carbondale. 

Carbondale Police say officers were dispatched at about 11:30 p.m. to the 600 block of East College Street where approximately 10 to 15 teenagers were vandalizing a homeless encampment.  One of the the homeless returned and confronted the juveniles who responded by physically attacking the homeless person. At one point, police say one of the attackers brandished a firearm, but did not fire any shots.   

The victim was taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspects were last seen in the 800 block of East College Street.
