CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – Carbondale Police have made an arrest in a homicide investigation.

On February 28th of 2021, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis contacted Carbondale Police regarding an injured infant they were treating. The child had been transferred to their hospital from Memorial Hospital of Carbondale that same day. The infant was treated for severe life-threatening injuries, and the child ultimately died as a result. An investigation has been on-going since.

An arrest warrant was issued on February 7, 2024 for 28 year old Melvin Daniels of Chicago, for First Degree Murder. Daniels is the biological father of the victim and was arrested on Tuesday, February 13. He was extradited from Cook County to Jackson County and has since had his pre-trial detention hearing.

Daniels was released from custody on pre-trial conditions.
