MURPHYSBORO, IL. (WJPF) – A Kansas man has pleaded guilty to charges relating to the 2016 shooting of a Carbondale Police Officer.

24-year-old Alex Karcher admitted his role in a criminal enterprise that moved illegal drugs and money in Jackson and Williamson Counties.

According to the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, on July 31, 2016 Karcher and other co-defendants were pursued by Carbondale Police. That chase eventually led to a shootout. Karcher admitted that he fired seven shots at police, one shot going through the squad car’s windshield, the shattered glass hitting officer Trey Harris in the eye.

State prosecutors have recommended that Karcher be sentenced to between twenty-five and thirty years in prison.

He’s currently in the Jackson County Jail awaiting sentencing.
