The National Council for Home Safety and Security has put out their list of the safest cities in Illinois for 2018.

The cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes per 1,000 people. With violent crimes being weighted more heavily.

The Chicago suburb of Western Springs topped the list. The only city in southern Illinois in the top ten was number 4 Waterloo.

Much further down the list were numbers 180 Herrin, 181 Carbondale, and 204 Mt Vernon.

Springfield, the home of the state capitol came in at 201.
