A fishing accident near the Johnson Creek area of Kinkaid Lake resulted in the drowning of one man Friday.
According to a press release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, just before 11:00 AM, deputies responded to the report of a possible drowning.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers learned that two men were fishing from a boat when their trolling motor became disabled and the men tried to pull the motor out of the water to repair it.
It was at that time, police say, that 64 year old Larry Huffman of Cape Girardeau, MO. fell into the water.
The other man in the boat as well as people nearby searched for Huffman until authorities arrived, but they could not find him.
His body was later recovered by Jackson County Deputies and officers from the IDNR.
The Carbondale Fire Department and the Carterville Fire Department dive team assisted in the recovery.
The investigation is ongoing.
