Carbondale Police are warning of a phone scam.

According to a release from the Carbondale Police Department, authorities were called about a deception complaint at a local bank.

A suspect had reportedly called the victim, portraying themselves as a detective, saying they worked for Publisher’s Clearing House, and also saying that the victim must pay the suspect a “considerable” amount.

The suspect then ordered the victim to shred all Western Union documents after the victim was depleted of their cash, saying this was to save the victim from paying taxes.

Carbondale Police remind you to never conduct business over the phone, and to get all information pertaining to a potential transaction in writing. If you have any information about the scammers, you are encouraged to contact Carbondale Police at 618-457-3200.
