A letter was released yesterday written by Senator Dick Durbin and Representative Mike Most recommending that the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development investigate on their review of allegations that the Alexander County Housing Authority management misspent money on employees while housing developments weren’t being kept up.

The letter included citations from the Southern Illinoisian’s piece called “Chaos in Cairo”, that was first seen on August 23rd.

This piece claimed that hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent on generous employee salaries and benefits, retirement incentives, contracts and legal settlements, travel fees and other things, but claims that while these things were being paid for, the housing authority was being somewhat ignored.

Some of the things that were caused from money being spent elsewhere were the units were overrun by rodents and other vermin, issues with mold and mildew, roads lined with garbage, and the amount of violent crimes being committed were rising.

Bost and Durbin hope this issue will be taken seriously and investigated as soon as possible.
