CARBONDALE — The Carterville Lady Lions are headed back to the 2A state semifinals for the third straight year after shutting out Red Bud 6-0 to win the SIU Supersectional.
University of Illinois signee Caidence Phillips tossed a 2-hit shutout striking out 14 for the Lady Lions. Phillips’ was one of five Carterville batters to tally two hits on the evening in front of a massive crowd at SIU’s Charlotte West Stadium. Kendall Henrikesen drove in three with Colbie Bennett, Lainey Workman, and Emily Ford each adding RBIs.
Carterville improves to 37-1 and advances to face Williamsville Thursday at 4:45 in the second 2A semifinal at the Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria. Seneca will take on Brimfield in the first semi.
Red Bud, who was making its first supersectional appearance, finishes 30-9.
