PINCKNEYVILLE — Behind the pitching and hitting of Caidence Phillips as well as a big day at the plate for Kendall Henrikesen, the Carterville Lady Lions rolled to their third straight softball sectional championship, shutting out Mt. Carmel 8-0.

Phillips tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out 16 on the day, including 11 in a row at one point. At the plate, the University of Illinois signee singled home a pair of runs in the first inning and added a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

In between, Henrikesen took care of the offense. The sophomore just missed sending one over the right field fence in the third, but when the ball bounced away, she never stopped running and ended up with a homer of the inside-the-park variety. Then in the fourth, Henrikesen came to the plate the bases loaded and cleared them with a three-run triple.

Both Phillips and Henrikesen had 4 RBIs on the day.

Carterville has outscored its four opponents 37-0 in the postseason to improve to 36-1 and advance to the SIU Supersectional. Waiting for the Lady Lions will be Red Bud, who beat Richland County 5-4 to win the Nashville Sectional, the first softball sectional title in school history. First pitch is set for 7:00 Monday night at Charlotte West Stadium.
