For Immediate Release: Rainbow Cafe Youth Development Camp 2018

The Rainbow Café of Carbondale, IL is hosting its first ever weekend
development camp at Camp Manitowa! As a back-to-school activity for
LGBTQIA+ youth, the camp will provide two days of bonding, empowerment,
and support through peer workshops, hiking, social activity and fun!

When: September 15-16, 2018.
Where: Camp Manitowa at Cedar Point, Sahara Lodge and Director’s Cabin,
1327 Camp Cedar Point Lane, Makanda, Illinois 62958

Last year, the Rainbow Café hosted its first ever Youth Empowerment Day
Camp. As a result of the overwhelming popularity and success of that
event, we strove to expand this programming for youth in 2018.
Originally planned for a week in June, this event was rescheduled and
pared back to a weekend as a result of financial needs. We hope to
provide this service for all LGBTQIA+ youth who are interested,
regardless of financial capability. The youth have engaged in
fundraising activities, such as a carwash, to help raise money for
themselves and their peers to attend this weekend event. Others can help

nights, which provides a safe, affirming and accepting space and a
social/support group for high school age gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender youth, friends and allies in Southern Illinois.  The Rainbow
Café is a non-profit organization, sponsored by the Carbondale Unitarian
Fellowship and The Church of the Good Shepherd of Carbondale, IL. As a
nonprofit organization, RC relies on financial help from our community
to continue providing services and safe space to our youth, ages 13-19.
Rainbow Café is in its seventeenth year of operation.  Additional
programming includes YES! Youth Empowerment Saturdays, Transitions – a
peer support group for transgender youth and young adults ages 16-21,
and our newly formed Parent and Family Peer group, Unconditional.
