A Harrisburg doctor convicted in a scheme to kidnap the former Saline County State’s Attorney was back in court yesterday, but without a lawyer…

Brian Burns has been in the Saline County jail since last year, facing murder charges in the death of his estranged wife, Carla Burns. Since his arrest on those charges, he has been convicted of plotting to have the late Saline county state’s Attorney – Mike Henshaw – kidnapped. He was due to be sentenced yesterday, but without representation, his sentencing was delayed.

Burns’ latest attorney – Bryan Drew – withdrew from the case last month, citing a breakdown in communication. Burns told a judge that his assets have been seized and he cannot afford to hire someone to represent him in the sentencing.

Marion attorney Duane Verity is now representing Burns in the murder case.

Officials are looking into whether Burns is eligible for a court appointed attorney. A status hearing is set for next Tuesday.
