More details and further clarification about what happened in Friday’s fatal shooting in Herrin have now been released.

According to a press release from the Herrin Police Department, at around 1:00 PM Friday, officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex.

Upon police arrival at the scene, witnesses told police that the shooting had occurred in a common area of the complex and that the shooter, 23 year old Cory Finney was still at the scene.

Finney though, had left the complex unseen through another exit.

The victim, who has now been identified as 51 year old Matthew Lewis, of Herrin, was taken by ambulance to the Herrin Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

A short time later, Finney turned himself in at the Herrin Police Department without incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
