Governor Bruce Rauner’s office tells Newsradio WJPF the governor will be in Murphysboro to announce that the Illinois Youth Center will be repurposed and re-open.

The former youth center, which opened in 1997 and was closed in 2012, will be turned into a minimum security prison facility that is focused on life skills and re-entry.

Rauner’s office said the new facility will train inmates in vocational and life skills, to prepare them for a successful transition back into society.

The governor will make the announcement during an event set for 11:30 today.

The former IYC employed about 100 people.
