Snake Road in Union County will be closed for two months – the road formerly known as La Rue Road is inside the Shawnee National Forest. It is closed twice a year to allow snakes and amphibians to migrate across it.

The US Department of Agriculture says that 59 percent of reptiles and 66 percent of amphibians known to occur in Illinois can be seen during the migration.

They migrate across the road to reach the limestone bluffs where they hibernate for the winter.
