Three buildings on the SIU Edwardsville Campus have tested positive for lead in the water.

Rendelman Hall, Metcalf Theater, and Lovejoy Library are the buildings whose lead levels exceed the federal and state standard of 15 parts per billion according to tests ran earlier this month.

While no scientific explanation has been reached as to why the lead levels suddenly went up, the current theory is that the tested water was sitting in the pipes longer than normal, and simply absorbed contaminants.

The school has shut down the water fountains in the affected buildings and has advised workers to let the water run for at least three minutes before using it for cooking or drinking.
