CHICAGO (AP) — U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is donating a $10,000 campaign contribution he received from former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert to charity.

Kirk’s campaign manager said Thursday the Senator will give the funds to Family First Center of Lake County.

Kirk is seeking re-election next year in what’s expected to be one of the nation’s most competitive U.S. Senate races.

Earlier Thursday the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee issued a news release noting Kirk received $10,000 from Hastert’s political action committee in 2010. The organization called on Kirk to return or donate the money.

Hastert was indicted last week on one count of evading bank regulations. The indictment alleges the Illinois Republican agreed to pay $3.5 million in hush money to someone from the town where he once taught and coached.
