CHICAGO (AP) — The governing body of Illinois high school sports is creating a new concussions-related advisory council that’ll include former Chicago Bear Dave Duerson’s son.

That and other initiatives the Illinois High School Association is announcing Tuesday comes in the wake of a class-action suit alleging the IHSA isn’t doing enough to protect against head injuries.

Duerson killed himself in 2011 and left notes asking that his brain be tested for a concussion-related disease. IHSA Director Marty Hickman told The Associated Press Monday Tregg Duerson “brings a very unique perspective” to the issue.

The IHSA is also launching programs reemphasizing how to reduce concussion risks.

Hickman says the steps aren’t “directly related” to the lawsuit. But plaintiff’s attorney Joe Siprut says he’s glad the lawsuit’s already “provoking change,” but adds the initiatives don’t go nearly far enough.
