SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – There will be additional access for youth turkey hunting in Illinois this spring thanks to a federal grant.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says it received $1.7 million from them U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The IDNR says it is accepting applications from young turkey hunters to hunt on private land on sites in 28 counties. Hunters under age 16 who have passes a hunter safety course are eligible. The deadline is Feb. 27 for the youth season.

The opportunity is being offered through IDNR’s Illinois Recreational Access Program.
