A Mt. Vernon child who was hospitalized after being beaten by two relatives is now recovering in a St. Louis hospital.

Three-year old Lukas Burris reportedly suffered a stroke because of the severity of the abuse.

The relatives which beat Burris, Michael and Kaysie Belmont, appeared in court on Monday. Michael Belmont is charged with three felonies, two of which are aggravated battery of a child. One charge is a Class X felony, alleging that Belmont knowingly caused great bodily harm. The third is aggravated domestic battery.

Kaysie Belmont is charged with aggravated battery of a child, which is a class 3 felony.

Lukas Burris was reportedly living with the Belmonts on a part-time basis.
