CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Governor-elect Bruce Rauner (ROW’-nur) says he wants the Illinois Supreme Court to rule “as soon as possible” on whether a landmark pension overhaul violates the state Constitution.

A Sangamon County judge ruled Friday the pension fix is unconstitutional. Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the state will appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court.

Illinois’ pension systems are the worst-funded of any state in the U.S., with a roughly $100 billion shortfall.

Lawmakers and Governor Pat Quinn approved an overhaul last year that reduces benefits for retirees, but also reduces employee contributions.

Labor unions and retirees sued, arguing the state Constitution prohibits reducing benefits. The state argued pensions can be modified in times of crisis.

Rauner says he looks forward to working with the Legislature to craft an effective, bipartisan solution.
