Carbondale, Ill. – Carbondale city leaders will discuss a property tax increase Thursday night.

The city council is expected to meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The town is facing a budget shortfall of nearly $175,000 dollars.
The Southern Illinoisan reports the property tax would rise 18 percent under the proposal. This means residents will pay around $19 on property worth $100,000.

No action will be taken Thursday. If the increase were to go through, it would take effect in May of next year.
