EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The SIU Board of Trustees has signed off on two fee proposals meant to help the Carbondale campus’ sports programs and student newspaper.

The board agreed Tuesday to increase the student intercollegiate athletic fee by $9. The board also OK’d a new $9-per-semester student fee expected to raise more than $260,000 during fiscal year 2015 for the financially struggling Daily Egyptian newspaper.

The newspaper’s future turned cloudy in May when the board tabled the proposed fee.

During its special meeting Tuesday in Edwardsville, the board also approved interim deans.

No action was taken on how to replace Carbondale Chancellor Rita Cheng, the new president at Northern Arizona University. An interim chancellor should be voted on July 24 during the board’s next meeting.
