Carbondale, Ill. – Carbondale officials are warning residents about water in some parts of the town.

City Manager Kevin Baity says in an email that a skin contact and toxicity alert is out for the water in Evergreen Reservoir on Pleasant Hill Road and Piles Fork Creek near Grand Avenue.

City officials learned Friday afternoon the water in those two places was turning blue in some areas.

Baity says they believe some toxic algae may be forming, but they’re waiting on lab results for more information. He also says the absence of blue water does not make it clean.

Human exposure to the water may result in skin rashes. Animals swimming in or drinking the water may become sick with potentially fatal consequences.

Baity says the town’s drinking water should not be affected.
